Why Your Why in Business Will Keep You Motivated

Before you start working on your business idea, researching into who your ideal clients are and how to build a solid business, you need to start with YOURSELF. You need to ask yourself, why are you doing this business, what is it that is driving you? Why is it that you made the bold decision to start something on your own?

Most people follow the traditional career path in life, as that’s the ‘normal’ thing to do, that’s what’s expected from society and your family. However, what is your motivation for not following this ‘normal’ life path? What’s your motivation for maybe taking more of a risky decision, one that people think you are crazy for doing?

Why your WHY is important?

It is important to identify your why, as your why will keep you going when you feel unmotivated. Your why gets you excited when nothing else does. Your why is the reason for the pure existence of your business.

When nothing seems to be working and you just want to give up, coming back to your why can be so powerful. When you wonder how on earth you got yourself into starting your own business and how you’re going to pay all your bills, these are the days it’s most important to remember your why. Your why is what will pick you up and remind you of your dreams and goals.

Take some time to really think about your why.

So often I hear my clients say they want more money, they want more travel… Often it turns out they want more IMPACT, more FREEDOM, more PASSION. Don’t just take the first why that comes up but dig a little deeper. Maybe it’s hard for you to figure out your why, you need to do some digging. Maybe you are already successful in your business, so don’t think you need to know your why. You shouldn’t miss this step, just because you feel you are already ahead of it. It’s in fact quite an important piece of your business and maybe even your message.

My WHY

I’m not shy about sharing my why, as maybe it will help to inspire you and give you something to think about. Your why could be similar or completely different, it doesn’t matter, we all have our own story.

The discovery of my why was a huge realization for me. Beforehand, I thought my why was a much simpler version. I craved FREEDOM, being free from a corporate job with its restrictions, freedom to travel where and whenever I wanted, freedom in terms of money.

But then it struck me. This was only the surface of my why and I needed to dig much deeper to discover my actual why.

After figuring it out, I decided to share my story on my personal profile on Facebook, which definitely took some courage. But it was so beautiful to receive so many messages from friends and acquaintances full of love and support.

So in a couple of words my why is: I do not want to postpone the dreams I have for a later stage in life. I want to live my life exactly the way I am dreaming of - right now. No more postponing, no more ‘maybe later’.

How to find your WHY

Your why is not your sales pitch, it is the backbone of your business.

Ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers on a blank piece of paper. Write the answers in present tense, like everything is already happening. This is a great mindset exercise of showing yourself what is possible to achieve in your life.

- What is your vision?

- What is it that you want to achieve?

- Where do you want to be in five years?

- How will it feel to reach this goal?

- Why do you want this business? And how does it make you feel?

- What do you want to achieve through your work?

- What legacy are you going to leave behind for your family? For the whole world?

- If earning money wasn’t a concern of yours, what is it that you would be doing?

Your WHY

After answering the questions above, what comes up for you? What do you think your why is? What is the one thing that will always motivate you?

If you wanted to, especially when you are still struggling with self worth, a good reminder throughout your day is to have your why as an image on your phone or laptop wallpaper. Write your why out on a piece of paper and display it around your home somewhere where you’ll see it everyday, maybe your bathroom mirror or next to your bed.

So... what's your why?
